Question: Is there anything I can do after my hair transplant to help minimize the scar?
Answer: A scar is formed after any surgical incision, but several things can be done to help minimize scarring. Plastic surgeons use particular techniques when closing incisions that reduce scarring. The donor scar should not be a problem unless you shave the scalp. If that is your intention, you should not consider a hair transplant. Patients can do several things following their surgery to optimize the appearance of scars as well. These include keeping the incisions clean, avoiding tension/pressure on the incisions, and minimizing sun exposure. Once the wound has completely healed, many plastic surgeons recommend scar massage, which can help soften the scar. If any early signs of excessive scarring are present, they should be brought to the plastic surgeon’s attention so that additional therapies, such as steroid injection into the scar tissue, can be considered.
