Question: In what instances could a chemical peel or microdermabrasion be sufficient in place of a facelift?
Answer: Chemical peels and microdermabrasion are good treatment modalities for mild to moderate facial wrinkles. These options should be thought of as prior to or in addition to a facelift, rather than in place of one. Facial rejuvenation can begin with chemical peels or microdermabrasion to resurface fine lines and provide a small amount of skin tightening. Patients will more severe deformities will achieve little benefit from these options and would likely benefit much more from a facelift. In some cases, a chemical peel (or microdermabrasion) can be added to a facelift to rejuvenate an area not directly addressed by the facelift, such as the lower eyelids or around the lips.
