Question: Is alar base reduction the correct technique for improving flared nostrils? How is this performed?
Answer: Alar base reduction is one technique for alar base reduction. In this technique, an incision is made along each ala (edge of the nostril) and they are brought closer together and stitched into the desired position. The scar is hidden in the natural crease between the ala and the cheek/lip. Sometimes a piece of tissue along the back edge of the nostril is removed so that ala can move into its new position. This scar is well-hidden too.
